Flotsam & Jetsam

Bob drumming white bg 450x299Time flies! We have been in the new Local 65-699 home for a little over 14 month and we have had so many compliments on the appearance of the property. Some of you attended the open house and some of you came to the Annual meeting when we awarded lapel pins to those members who have achieved milestones of Union membership. Leroy Melinder and myself reached our 50th year of membership, and both of us are here to tell about it!
Betty Holland and family were on hand when we dedicated the new rehearsal hall in honor of our former leader, E.C. Holland, when we opened the house in August. We want you to be proud of your Union Hall and come by and enjoy. The grand piano has been totally redone and we wish to have it played. Your Executive Board chose to polish the concrete floor rather than maintain wood or carpet composition. Surprisingly, the acoustics are tolerable! We still may add window curtains and/ or diffuser ceiling tiles should we decide to dampen the room further. Those who have rehearsed since we finished the room, have accepted the acoustics as is. The Board will address the landscaping as we go forward and additional external lighting and roof drains have been added most recently.
Currently, both the HSO and HBO contracts are ratified and HGO will finish their negotiations during next months’ tour in NYC. The production of “The Passenger” will be performed by the Company during the Lincoln Center festival and members of the orchestra will display there talent in the APPLE.
We have attended the Western and Southern conference of Locals and Lovie has plans to attend both the Theatre Musicians (TMA) and the Symphony Musicians ( ICSOM) conferences in the coming months. Board member Nancy Nelson attended the Regional Orchestra (ROPA) Conference as she currently holds the title of Vice President for that group.
HSO is celebrating its’ Centennial and has introduced Maestro, Andres Orozco-Estrada to Houston audiences with plans for a block buster season this fall. I was able to see/hear “The Planets” and observe this Colombian native work his magic with the finest orchestra in the country. The photography accompanying this production is amazing and so are the arrangements. Go see this band with this new conductor while you can still get a seat! Bravo HSO!
Hope you are ready for a long hot summer ,and try and visit us if you are near the Heights.

Bob McGrew, Secretary Treaurer
